Bio

Lucia Hwong has earned distinguished credits as a composer and instrumentalist. She has created music for theater, film, television, dance and the concert stage.

Her music for theater includes the scores for the Tony Award winning Broadway production of M. BUTTERFLY and Tony nominated GOLDEN CHILD. Also David Henry Hwang’s New York Shakespeare Festival presentations of SOUND AND BEAUTY and Obie Award winners, DANCE AND THE RAILROAD and F.O.B. She composed the music for IAGO and VENUS VOODOO at Lincoln Center, THE BIG ONE SHOT at Naked Angels and SNAKE IN THE VEIN for the Blank Theatre Co.

Ms Hwong scored the Mark Taper & McCarter Theatre premieres of Anna Deavere Smith’s TWILIGHT: LOS ANGELES, 1992 and created a twelve tone fugue for Joyce Carol Oates THE PERFECTIONIST. Among her dance scores FIERCE ATTACHMENTS debuted at the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Next Wave Festival. She also scored Ali MacGraw’s YOGA MIND&BODY; WORLD WILDLIFE; GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM SOHO videowall.

Ms. Hwong was born in Hawaii and raised in Los Angeles. She studied ethnomusicology, theater and dance at UCLA and Columbia University.

Ms. Hwong’s music for television and film underscores social and political concerns: HIROSHIMA/NBC, VIETNAM WAR STORY /HBO, FORBIDDEN NIGHTS /ABC Tiananmen massacre, PAPER ANGELS / PBS Angel Island, JENNIFER’S IN JAIL/ Lifetime girl gangs, LOTUS / AFI women’s’ emancipation in China, WHO KILLED VINCENT CHIN (1998 Oscar nomination: Best Documentary) racial murder, and SILVERLAKE LIFE THE VIEW FROM HERE AIDS which was honored with Sundance Film Festival and Peabody Awards.

Concert pieces include THE UNWELCOME. RHYTHM OF YOUR PULSE which was commissioned and performed by the Women’s Phiharmonic of San Francisco and DRUM SONG, with libretto by George C. Wolfe, was written for the Boys Choir of Harlem.

Her two albums, HOUSE OF SLEEPING BEAUTIES and SECRET LUMINESCENCE are on the Private Music label and are receiving international air play. The latest Goddess Trilogy CDs of sensual new age world music infused with healing energy are on her own label.

Time Magazine and the New York Times have honored Lucia Hwong by including her in a select listing of America’s exceptional new composers, The Asian American Arts Alliance has named her 1993 Artist of the Year.

Ms. Hwong incorporates the healing and inspirational energy of Reiki into the creation of her music.
